For those who don't know, Victoria Martindale and her mom were attacked by 3 pit bulls last Friday.  Victoria is in the hospital and is expected to have a tough recovery.  Be praying for her!

Mike Lafferty sent me an email today saying that he heard on the radio that the new HEB PLUS in Leander is hiring and doing on-the-spot interviews at the Leander Public Library.  Apparently, they have 300 job openings to fill.  If you're interested, put on a decent shirt, go show your face at the library, and see what's up.

This past Sunday Night Youth was awesome.  We had an all-worship night.  Caleb, Byron, and Kaylee led worship, Byron shared his testimony, Desi shared that she's leaving during the Christmas break to go live with her dad in Odessa, and God just showed up through it all.  There was laughter, tears, hugs, prayers...and it was cool.  Thanks to all who came.

Remember, if you want to help collect shoeboxes this week, just show up at HighPoint between 4-7pm.  The best thing about faith is not just having it, but using it!  Come join us.

Have a great week!

Saturday, Nov. 11 11:15am

I know several students and small groups have already filled shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, but if you want to fill a shoebox and haven’t yet had the time (or the opportunity), we’re having a Wal-Mart Group Shopping Trip this coming Sunday from 2-3pm.  Come as individuals, in groups, or as a family to get supplies to fill your shoebox.  It’s more fun when you do it as a group, so come join us!  Meet in the Toy Department of Wal-Mart (183 and 1431) at 2:00 sharp!

Speaking of OCC, this coming week (Nov.13-20) is COLLECTION WEEK.  All HS and MS students are encouraged to sign up and help collect boxes at HighPoint from 4-7pm each day after school.  Sign-up form will be available at Sunday Night Youth.  If you can’t make it to SNY, call me at 731-0064 to get signed up.

On another note, this past week I had the opportunity to spend 4 days at Running Brushy Middle School speaking to about 140 7th-graders about Sex, Abstinence, Character, and Goals.  Now, speaking to a ton of 7th-graders about sex may not sound fun to you...well, it didn’t sound “fun” to me either, to be honest...but, all things considered, it went really, really well.  I got to see many HighPointYouth students there and that made everything a ton easier!  If you have a heart for students and want to be a volunteer speaker like me, let me know.  As a side bonus, it will increase your speaking skills dramatically!  If you can successfully speak to a roomful of 7th-graders, then no group of corporate executives will EVER intimidate you again!  Plus, you’ll be blessed in other really cool ways.  Call me if you’re interested.

For you guys out there, read Psalm 18 during your next quiet-time...it’s a very MANLY section of scripture!  Have a great weekend,

-Mike

The 2006 version of the annual Fall Advance is history.  As I say every year, I think it was the best ever.  Gino and Carissa did an incredible job and I know they left the students involved with tools and teachings that will last way beyond the weekend.  I'll be hearing "the sky is blue" for a long, long time.

A huge thanks also goes out to Carroll Casey (our awesome cook), Cari Billingsley, Joel Goudeau, Kathleen Williams, Heather Oliver, and of course, Jeanne-Mari.  She's really the glue that holds everything together.  Everyone was willing to do whatever they could (from serving meals to cleaning gross toilets) to make this weekend an awesome success.

I always look forward to what God has in store for us all.  Thanks to everyone else for all the prayers!!!  They were huge!

Friday, Nov. 3  8am

The 2006 version of the annual Fall Advance starts tonight!  Pack light, but pack warm.  We have a ton of students signed up, leaders that are fired up, and a couple of speakers that will blow you away.  We're gonna have fun.  Don't forget to be at HighPoint at 5pm sharp!

I sent the following in an email this past week, but just wanted to make sure everybody saw it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thinking way ahead (summer 2007), we’re looking at doing a mission trip in mid-July to Mississippi (ongoing Katrina reconstruction).  Check out the following site for more info:  Group Workcamps--Bay St. Louis, MS

Total cost will be around $600 per student.  Pray hard about this.  Soon, I’ll be asking who will be going for sure, who might be able to, and who doesn’t want to go.  This is so I can reserve the correct number of spaces.  Pray that God makes it clear what you should do.  Don’t get caught up in the 600 bucks...it’s just money.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you didn't get this email from me and want to be on the email list, shoot me an email at mike@hpf.org and just let me know!  Students, parents...anybody's welcome to get the email.

May God truly bless you today,

-Mike

I've recently been planning summertime events for Summer '07.  It's not the easiest thing to do.  Besides the yearly summer camp at Tanglewood and Six Flags trips, I feel we really need to do both a mission trip and some type of wilderness trip.  To better expose our students to different types of trips, we've decided not to do either the Mexico Mission Trip (that we did in '04 and '06) or Wilderness Trek ('05).  We're looking at several options like Group Workcamps or maybe a wilderness trip with Noah's Ark.  After a lot of prayer, that's where I'm leaning right now, anyway.  Those are both relatively inexpensive and yet entirely planned out.  It helps when they're already planned by the sponsoring organization because we as leaders can focus on creating/fostering relationships with students instead of running around worrying about logistical stuff (food, lodging, contacts, etc.).

Just in case anybody wants to know, this planning isn't just a "that looks cool so let's do it" kind of process.  We try to be as purpose-driven as possible when doing this.  It all goes back to why we exist as a youth ministry.  For example, if we go with the events we're planning now, here's how each event fits with each purpose:

     Tanglewood Camp - discipleship (grow)

     Mission Trip - ministry (give)

     Wilderness Trip - fellowship (connect)

     Six Flags - evangelism (share)

Of course, other purposes are hit at each event, but the ones listed above are the primary purposes for the event.  It may or may not be obvious, but it works.  And if anybody's wondering, the Worship purpose gets hit several other times throughout the year.

So please start praying for Summer '07!  Have a great Wednesday!

Super-Duper Online Contest:  The first high school student that calls me at 731-0064 can bring themselves and 3 other friends over to our house Saturday night to cook out over an open fire.  S'mores are inlcuded.

The Advance is just over a week away.  I've been talking to our speakers who are coming and going over what's going to happen.  It's gonna be an awesome weekend.  I encourage everybody to make sure you're there.  Be praying for the weekend!!

Our youth leadership had high expectations for this past weekend's Primal Quest event.  I must say, it lived up to (and far surpassed) all expectations.  This was the first weekend-long event we've ever had just for our Middle School students and it was awesome (as well as being WAY past due!).  The thing I kept hearing repeated over and over by students throughout the weekend was, "I've known many of the kids here for awhile, but I've never really 'known' them until now."  And that was exactly our goal...for the kids to realize how much they belong and are loved by the other students in the group.

For those that don't know, Kyle Dugan put this entire weekend together.  It was an awesome idea that was implemented very well by a great weekend leader team.  This is the third time I've had the opportunity to work with Kyle on a big event, and it gets better every time.  Thanks to all who helped to make it successful.  A special thanks goes out to Dwight and Linda Forrister (for letting us invade their property for the weekend), Lamont (who took care of tons of logistical stuff), Holly Lafferty (who did anything and everything), all the youth leaders who make our youth ministry possible, and all the parents who trusted us with your kids for the weekend.  All the students behaved very well and were always respectful.  I'm excited that all of them are going to be part of HighPointYouth for years to come.  I think we all had plenty of bug bites, scratches, and muddy clothes after the weekend was over, but it was worth the struggle!

I'm meeting with Randy and Paul in the morning for our weekly staff meeting.  It's always a good time with these guys.  I learn much every time I'm with them.  Tomorrow, I'm sure we'll be talking about the upcoming service time changes and recapping what Randy learned while he was out of town last week.

Going to bed now,

-Mike

JM, Melissa and I headed off to CiCi's tonight.  Apparently, Melissa's school regularly has a fund-raising night there where 10% of all the proceeds go to the school.  She's been bugging us ever since last year to go to one of these things, so we finally gave in.  Plus, it's pizza!  What's not to like?  Well, then Kaylee Howell (she's helping with Primal Quest this weekend) wanted to talk about the weekend and what role she'd be playing.  So we invited her along...she brought Caleb.  So the plans were set.  JM, Melissa and I got there a little early and decided to go ahead and order (we were hungry!).  Well, one of the first people we see is Sara Zayed!  I had forgotten she worked there, but she definitely took care of us.  She specially made me an Ole' pizza...my fave at CiCi's.  I had four pieces of it.  Then about four more pieces of different kinds.  I like Sara.  She's one of those people that are just cool...and they make you feel cool just because you know them.  Anyway, so we're sitting there eating and still waiting for Caleb and Kaylee when William, Aaron, Kerby, and Charlie walk in to eat!  And of course, C and K come in just behind them.  By the time it was all over, we had 8 people chowing at our table and Melissa was off talking to a bunch of friends she knew from school.  That may not seem real exciting, but it was a lot of fun.  We all talked a lot about the Advance coming up, Primal Quest, and this coming Sunday night (Kaylee's leading the lesson).  Good times, good times.

My dad's birthday was today.  He turned 59.  He doesn't look 59 and he certainly doesn't act 59!  In fact, I called him about 8:30 this morning and he and my mom had just ridden on their new motorcycle from Levelland to Lubbock (~30 min. ride) to go eat breakfast and they were gonna spend the day riding around.  How awesome is that!  I hope I get to do something cool on my 59th birthday!

That's it for tonight!  Pray hard!

-Mike

Tuesday, Oct. 10  10pm

Up to now, I've been worried that Primal Quest was going to have weather that was too hot...we'd all be miserable.  But no worries about that now...looks like we're gonna have some really cool weather this weekend...and maybe some rain!  While that will make for a crazy (and messy) weekend, it will be very memorable!  :-)

I'd like to go into details about what Kyle and I have been talking about...but it's all a big secret at this point.  All I can say is...it's gonna be a fun weekend and I'm really looking forward to what happens.  I'll be sure to post more after the weekend's over.

Operation Christmas Child is going on right now.  How cool is it that you can give a kid around the world an awesome present for only $7 and the cost of the stuff to fill it?!  Every single person at HighPoint (both young and old) should be filling up at least one shoebox.  That's my prayer, anyway.

Thursday, Oct. 5  noon-time

Sunday night's worship night really was a sign of things to come.  The leaders did awesome, Caleb had an excellent testimony that caused plenty of discussion, and everybody felt free enough to be truly involved in worshipping our Awesome God.  Very cool.  Thanks to all who helped with both the preparation and the execution of this night!

I say it's a sign of things to come in that the students were the ones who pulled it off.  And when youth are the ones planning a worship night for other youth, life is good.

I've got a lot of random thoughts today.  Here's a sampling:

  • Primal Quest is getting here fast...and it's gonna be cool.
  • The Advance is getting here fast...and it's gonna be cool.
  • Operation Christmas Child is already here...I hope everybody fills up a shoebox!
  • Helping people in real need is an awesome thing.
  • Texas plays OU this weekend...I don't think it'll be 45-12 again this year.
  • The Area Youth Pastor's meeting is this Saturday at HPF...that's really taking off.
  • Melissa is getting really good at soccer...it's hard to steal the ball from her now.
  • I really need to get on my bike.
  • Jeanne-Mari is doing the lesson this Sunday night so I bet it's good.
  • My good friend Nathan Allan is on a Walk to Emmaus this weekend...it should rock his world.
  • I've been extremely pumped up by how our students are moving from being 'attenders' to being 'leaders.'
  • God is good, all the time.

Enough of that.  It's a busy time of year and getting busier.  Just gotta make sure to keep taking that individual God-time...it's amazing how that makes the everyday load lighter!  Have a great day,

-Mike

Saturday, Sept. 30  11:45pm

I'm looking forward to our Worship Nite this Sunday evening.  I met with several students (Byron, Caleb, Kaylee) on Wednesday night before small groups to plan it.  They came up with a few songs and we practiced some, but we didn't get as much planned as we had hoped.  But I was pleasantly surprised when I got a phone call from Kaylee Saturday while I was watching Melissa's soccer game.  She told me they had everything planned out to the last detail.  All I was allowed to do was to start us off with a prayer.  I said I could handle that.  I'm really looking forward to the night and to hearing what Caleb's going to share with the group.  I'll make sure to put something here about it after the fact.

Speaking of Caleb, he's a Senior this year at LHS.  We've started a new thing this year in that each Senior is going to share their testimony during one of our monthly worship nights.  He's going to be the first one to do it.  He's led devo before so I know he'll have something substantial to say.  Be praying for him.

Parents, did you know you can now check your students' grades online by clicking the above LHS link??  I sure didn't.  But I am sure I'll get some grief from some of our kids for telling you about it!  :-)

That's enough for now.  Have a great rest-of-the-weekend!

-Mike

Sunday, Sept. 24  1:30pm

Britney Nolf got baptized yesterday and it was an awesome time.  She had lots of family there, her small group leaders, and several other friends and neighbors that all witnessed her birth into Christ.  Very cool.  Britney's got good balance too...the riverbed was really slippery (as always), but she didn't lose it like others have (and as I have).  :-)

The two big events coming up--Primal Quest for middle school and the Fall Advance for high school--are coming together nicely.  Primal Quest is a survival weekend and will take place out in the middle of nowhere...we'll on the Forrister's property actually, but it seems like the middle of nowhere.  :-)   This will be the first Primal Quest ever but I'm betting it becomes an every-year thing.  The Fall Advance is a weekend full of relational and spiritual growth...and it's an event that's been around a long time.  I'm pretty sure this is our 7th annual Advance and I'm getting pumped about this year!  This is the first year we'll have speakers so it'll definitely be different...and probably a lot better for several reasons.

Please be praying for these two events and all our MS and HS students.  We have an awesome youth group because we have awesome students and leaders!

-Mike
